Our first win! But not exactly the win we were hoping for, the weapon stopped spinning after that first hit with Shreddit Bro - Battlebots. Although we took some damage to the teeth of the weapon, the drum and internal motor were fine.
Ominous was originally designed for the small MGM 25063 controllers we still had from Reality, but the additional testing since 2020 showed that this controller was woefully undersized for it's application.
Turns out that trying to shoehorn a big MGM 40063 weapon motor controller in the robot wasn't that easy after all. That bigger ESC made sure the hub motor would spin without error/faults, but it also decreased the clearance towards the hard metal outside of the frame. That hit mushroomed the sides of the controller in such a way that it still kinda functioned, but any high current would trigger an error in the MGM and had to be reset. That's why we could spin up slowly, but any contact would kill the power.
Luckily we received a spare MGM right before we had to fly to Vegas and with some additional rubber padding we should be ready for our next fight against Switchback - Battlebot

Glückwunsch an Ominous!
I think a great thing about this sport is how easy it is to interact with the competitors. I love interacting with fans in a positive and negative way, and I’m thankful for the people who have shown our team support the last few days. I believe team Riptide acted well within the rules but not in a sportsmanlike manner, they are not mutually exclusive and that’s okay.
I’m noticing that most people who are attacking mine and my teams character, or saying that we “pussify” the sport are dudes who all look the same of have the same vibe. My advice, find something you’re passionate about and have someone else unnecessarily destroy it - then you will understand where our outrage comes from. We go into the sport knowing the possibilities of getting destroyed, but egregious displays of it are very uncommon for a reason.
PS; here’s a pic of our giant nut we won in 2001 for the haters
Unwritten rules exist in the sport especially for those who have competed for 20+ years. There is a camaraderie, and polite way or interfacing, generosity, providing helping hands to opponents, and fighting graciously that some younger teams and people outside of the sport don’t understand and only look at the written rules. It is rare to have teams continue to violate these rules and the ones that do usually have a large dislike and distrust within the community.
Captain Shred and the whole team are among the most jhonorable teams in the sport which is a measure of character, which is far more important in the big picture than “kicking ass” IMHO.
When a “disliked” team among builders loses, the pits explodes with joy and accolades to the team that defeats them. When a admired team looses everyone feels bad for the losing team. Usually we give accolades to the winner and feel bad for the loser since almost every team is respected and admired by the rest. It take a certain amount of character to even be able to design, build, test and compete in Battlebots. Riptide team has done a few other rude and inappropriate things even before the fight and Team Shred has not exposed publicly the rude act that was witnessed by others. It must have taken some discipline to not expose the other violations of etiquette that would get people even more riled up than they already are about Riptide .
Nah, hell with all that mess, you guys are class. Pure, absolute class. You've shown nothing but integrity throughout your run and as one of the most long-standing teams in the sport as a whole you've earned it. It would've been one thing if Shreddy went down in a blaze of glory where both bots were going all-out in a fight to the finish but to see it get demolished for absolutely no reason after being obviously incapacitated is just disgusting.
And I say this as an OG Robot Wars fan where bots getting demolished by the House Bots was more common than anything else. Times are different now, things cost more, and far more is on the line. Those who can't place themselves in the shoes of the teams need not apply here. It's about so much more than wins and losses, it's about community and it's obvious a team like Riptide has no regard for said community and that's just sad in the end.
