Alles anzeigenOkay we get it Hydra. We needed to get Hydrated.
First of all we were amazed by the shear awesomeness of Hydra. Not only did they get underneath at least one of Uppercut's forks in every collision, but they also gave us the most airtime we've ever had, and our first judges decision ever!
As engineers, we were super excited to look under the hood of Hydra and hear about how it works and Jake was more than willing to tell us everything we wanted to know (for curiosity's sake You know Uppercut doesn't ever have a real strategy in the box).
It was surreal getting to go into the box with Hydra and we're now seeded 4th for the final tournament!
Prefight: You might know that we only barely managed to make our weapon motor and controller upgrades for this season. That means we only had 2 motors and 2 controllers at the event. Unfortunately, after the Sawblaze fight, one of the controllers self-destructed leaving us with no choice but to run our old weapon setup for the Hydra fight while a teammate in Boston scrambled to assemble a new board and overnight it to us before any possible later matches. This meant the weapon spinup was much slower and slightly buggy at times. Regardless, we figured Hydra still wouldn't want to get hit by the old setup anyway See the attached picture of what an explosion inside Uppercut looks like!Fight: Yeah not much to say here. The picture describes the fight pretty well. Unfortunately we had the double whammy handicap of using our old motor setup while we repaired the new one. Not only are the hits more anemic, but also the controllers are buggy and require constant fiddling which distracts from focusing on driving. Not saying the fight would have gone the other way had we been at 100% but it certainly would have been more exciting. Next time Also Hydra is the lowest robot in the competition so there's that.
Minibot:
We had weight to run a minibot this year and so we ran the ..... Battlebox? One of our teammates made a driveable replica of the Battlebox and we put in some Hexbug Witch Doctor and Tombstone toys to have a fun ride.
Damage:
As for damage, we were glad Uppercut didn't have any major damage or failures in the arena.

episode 10Well well well, That was a great fight right?
Why do we always seem to lose our back wheel chain guards After a little welding a filler rod directly to whats left of the sheared off bolts, we just unscrew them and bolt that guard right back on.
If you look close you can see that hit on our back wheel dented in the side wall a little, but after turning the wheel by hand we figured it was fine enough to run. Now don't get me wrong, we came out of this match relatively unfazed by Uppercuts weapon , and yes they have posted that they had to use their old system for that match, but they definitely have our respect as Uppercuts weapon was pounding the competition up to this point, they just never got a good bite on hydra's sides. If we fight again I can see this going a completely different way. One of the front corner wedglets were bent in a little so we throw that one in the emergency only pile and chuck a fresh one on.You may have noticed the floor was messing us both up pretty bad, and looking back at the fight there was a few times it saved my butt... literally. After the hit to our back wheel we looked to not be driving great, if you look really close you'll see part of their mini bot arena got sucked up into that wheel midway through the match and locked it up. It was shredding the wheel as we tried to drive and eventually it broke the back wheel chain and spit out the back allowing us to finally drive straight and get that last flip in the match. So yes it was the mini bot that did most of the damage. Ok Alex Hattori
I just couldn't resist that one little digOverall I think it was a great match, yes Uppercut didn't get any big hits, but they proved they could take a flip or 2 or 3 and still survive which makes them look great to the selection committee and it proves why they got their well deserved #4 seed. I really think they are going to light up this tournament.
Funny story, we showed up every morning at about 6 and very few teams were ever there at that time so we decided to get a quick check on uppercut the morning of our fight. Turns out they cover everything in tarps so no looking for us.... This time at least.
Last thing I swear.....
Were you quick enough to notice the fatal damage to Hydra at the end of the fight. We have to make a special post just because its that big of a deal, but here's a hint, it wasn't damage from any bot or the box.Stay tuned for more....
A bit of a cool story following tonight's episode. About 3/4 through the filming day, we had a producer run up to us asking if we could fight. A few of the robots in the Top 32 were having issues, and it looked like they wouldn't be able to fight. Our bot was in pieces since we had torn it down diagnosing and fixing the drive cut-out issue from the Smee and Copperhead fights. It was fixed, but we hadn't put the 'bot back together yet. Since we only had two team members there, the incredible Valkyrie team threw their weight behind helping get us ready. In 21 minutes we rebuilt the robot, re-configured our speed controllers, tested in the test box, weighed, and pushed off to the arena. For reference, that'd usually take close to two hours. As we waited by the arena, the teams who were having issues made it to their fights with seconds to spare. That was it. As the final fight kicked off we sat back, our last hope of a miraculous last-second bid into the 32 over.
With that done, we focused our energy on our upcoming Bounty Hunters (watch NOW on discovery+!) and making a list of what to improve on next season. The best is yet to come!

Spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the most recent episode of @battlebots keep scrolling!! Thanks to @lincolnelectricretail we were able to get the HUGE chunks of aluminum weld filled, and after 7 hours of my masterful handling of the angle grinder (no exaggeration, 7 hours) I was able to get the weapon for malice practically brand new!!!

Well HyperShock
did a couple great things, at least once last night.
1: You couldn't ask for better showmanship than allowing us to you know, keep flipping them. 2: They started off with a huge hit and they pretty much survived after that, until, well, they didn't .
3: When we were done playing with our toy, he packed himself so nicely behind the wall
Look at that damage in just one hit. Lucky for us those are meant to be break away as to not damage the titanium pin or frame. Looks to have been perfect in that aspect. And once again, that darn back chain cover gets woofed away. Back to the welder to get those bolts out. Will and team were very generous and signed a little piece of Hypershock for us to take home.

Did you know that Valkyrie is capable of bending and cutting through 1/2" Titanium? Check out SubZero - BattleBot
's plow after our top 32 fight! SubZero definitely put our shock-resistance to the test with some crazy powerful flips! Might have even terrified the judges when we slammed into the wall
All in all, we had a great fight! SubZero packed quite a punch this year with a great flipper and impressive driving!
I do not have a problem and I can stop any time I want.
What? Everybody doesn’t have a pile of broken eteks in their garage? Sadly I have a bunch more too
Wie schon oben Erwähnt, hätte was...

Y'ouch! This one hurt the bank account. This 78lb Tribar was made of S7 toolsteel, and while it survived the fight against Chronos, it instantly shattered in our fight against Gruff!
Gruff installed what they called, "chocolate bars", which are welded blocks of steel in the front of their wedge. These were designed to maximize the impact load seen on our bar - and boy did it work!
What would you do to avoid this failure in the future?
Alles anzeigenFunny story. These pictures were taken 3 days before we even knew who was in the tournament. We just happen to be mounting the wedge and checking its full weight in case we got a big spinner next. So Hydra was strolling back from the scales and ooh, look, a Gigabyte is just chilling there. So we roll up and raise the cart up to level and there ya go, hopefully the fight of the night. What are the chances that we were actually matched up?
To be Fair, I don't think anyone on John's team knew definitively that we had a huge plow. What they DID know was the info we gave them, and that was that we made an attachment. Yes, we really did spend the day before the fight trolling them and even brought it completely up to the box only taking it off right before walk ins. Of course we weren't very subtle while making it to make sure they seen it.
This may seem like a jerk move, but this has a very specific purpose. Have John think about their self-righting stalk and possibly force them to switch away from their primary one.
Thank you Robotic Death Company for playing along

Our Round of 16 fight put us up against End Game and Rotator held up much better than we expected! We spent some time before the match trying to "armor" up our forks so they could be more durable and the extra steel was the reason why we could only utilize 2 out of 3 forks. End Game got a few good hits early on but our armor held up. We had one fork break and some 3D printed caps on the wheel guards but what cost us the match was the weapon dying on us. Very weird failure mode as nothing visibly burnt out, and it's the same thing that happened in our Big Dill fight that we weren't able to determine root cause on. Well, when the team removed the batteries after that match, we found a little gold piece stuck in our packing foam. Turns out a battery connector from the weapon circuit desoldered during the match due to the amount of current we now draw! I (Victor) was kicking myself for not having found this issue after the Big Dill match but for that case, the connector stayed on and resoldered to the wiring, so we couldn't tell anything was wrong! Inspecting End Game was fun because we caused more damage than we ever expected! Their front plows were very battered (Jack and Nick were very nice and gave use one as a trophy!), almost all the weapon belts we're sheared off, and a bit of hidden damage: the 50mm thick hardened steel asymmetric spinner was bent as well (Jack and Nick were nice enough to almost give us the spinner)! Overall though, I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished and of how hard our small team worked this year to get Rotator to fighting shape! At this point we changed batteries, changed forks, deburred some edges, and got ready for the Bounty Tournament! Debrief on our time in Bounty Hunters coming soon! Thanks to the fans for following us!
